Walking Trails, Castlebar, Co. Mayo

Walking Trails
There are many and varied walking routes and trails around Castlebar. We have walking maps and trails of the area, or we can arrange a guided tour with our local guide, Barry from Tourism Pure Walking Holidays.
Mayo is a walker’s paradise. Possibilities include the following :

Nephin Mountain
Nephin Mountain is just 20 minutes from Castlebar and is Connacht’s second highest mountain, offering superb views of Mayo in all directions from its central location. Just outside the small village of Lahardane and towering above Lough Conn, to 806m, Nephin offers a great day of hill walking, of around 4 to 5 hours duration.

OR

Family Fun Orienteering
In Moore Hall, near Carnacon, south Mayo, just 20 minutes drive from the Harlequin Hotel, we can arrange an afternoon of Orienteering for your family.
A fun day out for all the family, Family Fun Orienteering is a great way to get the children outdoors for the afternoon. Spend 2 hours searching for the markers and interacting with nature while you’re at it!

OR

The Bangor Trail
Ireland’s most remote walking route, The Bangor Trail takes you into the very heart of rural, wild and rugged Mayo. This is Atlantic blanket bog and Nephin Beg mountains country.
This is a fascinating and wonderful old trail, full of history, dating from a time when the vast swathes of North-West Mayo were not yet reached by road. As a means of moving animals down to the market towns of West Mayo, it meanders through the Nephin Beg Mountains and makes for a great day’s walking. The trail commences at Letterkeen Wood, west Mayo, just 30 minutes from the hotel and the walk takes around 4 to 5 hours.

OR

The Keenagh Loop
The Keenagh Loop is a pleasant introduction to the Atlantic blanket bog landscape of West Mayo. With the trailhead just 30 minutes from Castlebar, this loop brings walkers into the mountains of Mayo, without attaining any high points or climbing. Its pleasant route brings us below the mountain tops and along lovely river banks.
